About Us

Who are we? In northern Michigan the word Mackinac (pronounced mackinaw) refers to several geographic locations. These include straits, a bridge, and an island. The word itself means turtle in the Ojibway language.


This web site will help you take a look at the churches of Mackinac, learn about opportunities for service and growth in this Presbytery, and become acquainted with those entities that hold the fabric of this community together. You will discover, along the way, a variety of means to communicate with any part of the community for answers to questions you may have and for opportunities to better link you to ways to grow in your commitment to Jesus Christ and to serve others in specific ways.

Budget and Finance Committee

The Budget and Finance Committee are the corporate officers of the Presbytery. They act on behalf of the Presbytery when churches make requests to purchase or sell real property and when they encumber that property. This committee also builds the annual operating budget of the Presbytery and oversees the expenditure of resources during the year.

The Committee on Church Development creates and supports appropriate opportunities in Mackinac Presbytery to begin new churches and to revitalize existing churches.

Committee on Ministry

The Committee on Ministry (COM) works with churches to recruit, install, and support leadership. Leadership includes ministers and elders. In addition COM works with churches to promote peace and harmony and in many cases is the first resource when difficulty arises in the church.  Click here to download COM Manual.

Leadership Development

The Committee on Leadership Development acts as a coordinating group for initiatives in the area of Evangelism, Christian Education, Social Concerns, and Youth Ministry. Their role is to create an environment for leadership to work in these areas of ministry.

Nominations Committee

The Committee on Nominations provides the Presbytery with names of persons for election to all of the committees of Presbytery. They are committed to seeking a wide range of people from all parts of the Presbytery. The only committee for which they are not responsible is their own committee. The Council nominates names to be presented to the Presbytery of the Committee on Nominations

Permanent Judicial Commission

The Permanent Judicial Commission shall have seven members and will be activated to exercise authority as described in the Rules of Discipline of the Constitution of the Presbyterian Church. The Rules of Discipline are outlined under section D of the Book of Order.

The Committee on Personnel evaluates, supports and recruits appropriate staff for the Presbytery of Mackinac.

Preparation for Ministry

CPM concerns itself with recruitment, support, examination and ordination for people preparing for the ministry of Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). This committee also provides for, and supports the Lay Academy of the Presbytery.    This includes supervising all members of the Presbytery who are taking courses on line, through the Lutheran Lay School, and at the Three Lakes Lay Academy.  In addition the committee examines those members of Presbytery seeking commissioning as lay pastors in Mackinac Presbytery.

Presbytery Point Camp Board

Presbytery Point Camp Board operates the program and oversees the maintenance and development of buildings and Presbytery Point. They are a non-profit board acting to carry out the vision of Presbytery for camp and conference ministry.

Representation

The Committee on Representation evaluates and reports on whether the Presbytery of Mackinac has sought representation from all groups who make up the membership of the churches.

Session Records

The Committee on Session Records will annually review the minutes of the Sessions of the churches of Mackinac Presbytery. They present the findings of their review to the Presbytery for their approval.

Stewardship and Missions
